Giving Tuesday - In Support of the Frankie Lemmon School and Developmental Center

It's been over a year since my last update on Gabby and her amazing school.  Gabby is in her third year at the Frankie Lemmon School and she continues to make good progress.  Her teachers continue to provide loving support while encouraging her to stretch herself outside the limits of what she can already do.

And,  Gabby LOVES her school!!
One of her favorite games is to sing the "Hello Song" with me, and spell out each of the names of her classmates and teachers.   When she plays with her little dolls she will sing them songs she has learned from school, and act out scenarios from school such as saying "hello" and "goodbye" to her classmates and teachers.

Over this past year she has increased her level of SOCIAL communication.  She WANTS to be understood and COMMUNICATE with us.

She is working harder to articulate her words, is making more eye contact, and is beginning to use our names more to get our attention.
**In the past she would just yell out what she wanted and hope someone heard her.  Now she will come up to me and say "Mommy, instrument puzzle please." (i.e. play with her favorite puzzle).  (I have her school's speech therapist and teachers to thank for this achievement -- they worked with her, didn't give up on her, and eventually came up with a picture scheme to help teach her to use our names!!)**

She will now say "yes" or "no" when asked a question (instead of yelling in protest when the answer is no).  In fact, she is quite proud of being able to use these words properly, and gives a BIG smile when she says them!!

She is able to use more "carrier phrases" to express what she wants such as "I want to...." or "I don't want...", or "open the door", etc.

And, Gabby now will come up to me MULTIPLE TIMES a day to say "Mommy, hug?"  And then jump on me with the biggest and best Gabby bear hug!!  LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!

She is becoming more social in a playful way too.
She loves playing games such as hide and seek (although she refuses to do the hiding part, just the seeking).
She will count to 10 and say "ready or not here I come"!
She loves riding on our toy roller coaster (not just forwards, but also backwards and sideways), jumping on our trampoline, riding trains and carousels, and going to the playground to swing, slide and climb!

She also loves numbers and letters.  Can count, spell and read many words.  She can follow one step directions, and sometimes even two step directions.

Gabby is also becoming more tolerant to changes in her routine, and in exploring new places to visit.  In fact, we were able to take our first (entire) family trip to the beach in August.

Given all she has to overcome, we are amazed by her progress and so grateful to her school for the support and care they provide Gabby and our entire family.

Creating Bright Futures Campaign in support of The Frankie Lemmon School and Developmental Center

Welcome!  I have created this blog page to help raise money for the Creating Bright Futures Campaign in support of The Frankie Lemmon School and Developmental Center – where my daughter, Gabby, goes to preschool.

OUR STORY…

As many of you already know, our 4 year old daughter, Gabby, was born with a rare bone overgrowth disorder called Apert Syndrome. Gabby has had to endure (and continue to endure) multiple surgeries throughout her life to stay alive (expand her skull, open up her airway) and improve her syndactyly (fusion of her fingers).  In addition, Gabby has profound developmental delays and Autism which are not typical of Apert children.  Given this set of unique and complicated issues, it was difficult to focus and find the right therapies and therapists to help her. While a brave and happy little girl, Gabby was almost completely non-verbal, socially indifferent to other people – even her own family, was required to drink her meals through a bottle, and quite fearful of much of the world outside our home.

THE SCHOOL…

Things changed dramatically when Gabby was accepted into the Frankie Lemmon school at age 3.  We were incredibly fortunate as the school was only able to accept 29 children at that time.  The highly specialized and extremely dedicated staff of Frankie Lemmon are amazing.  They have high expectations for the children, provide huge support to the students and the families, and prove that assumptions and barriers can be knocked down!

The teachers and therapists are only a phone call or email away as issues or questions arise.  Picture stories, communication cards, and adapted utensils/tools are sent home to compliment what is being taught and used at school.

The school provides onsite Speech, Physical and Occupational Therapy.  They also incorporate Music Therapy weekly, and Animal Therapy every month.  The school offers monthly Family Partnership Days to allow for home visits, workshops (childcare provided) and family outings with the school.

RESULTS…

By the end of Gabby’s first year, the number of words she was using, her interaction with her family and her comfort out and about in the world had improved dramatically.

Before school began Gabby would only be able to stay outside at a playground for 15-20 before she was completely overwhelmed.  By Spring, not only was Gabby able to stay out longer, but was climbing up and sliding down slides on her own!

In addition, Gabby can now eat a “normal” meal with fork or spoon and drink from an open cup – something we were told by her doctors would never be safe or possible!

Yet, one of the biggest accomplishments was how Gabby began to interact more and more with the teachers and children at the school.  And, she learned how to hug!!  (As a Mother who loves her child desperately, this was by far one of the greatest personal gifts the school has provided me).
PLEASE WATCH THIS HUGS VIDEO (it is worth it!!)

HOW TO DONATE…

**And, if you make the donation in "Honor of Gabby", I can personally thank you with the official 2016 Frankie Lemmon School thank you card!!  (It even has Gabby’s picture on it)

IF YOU WANT A FEW MORE DETAILS…
